It's not just stress
Depression and anxiety can look like:
Constant worry, racing thoughts or feeling on edge
Trouble falling or staying asleep
Feeling numb, tearful or short-tempered
Losing interest in things you used to enjoy
Exhaustion that rest doesn't fix
Headaches, stomach issues or tension
The mental load is real
Many women carry the invisible work of a household: caring for children, supporting teenagers through adolescence, helping aging parents and often a partner too, while working. That load adds up. About 1 in 4 U.S. women had a mental illness in the past year, according to 2022 national data.
When hormones play a part
Mood can shift with your cycle, after pregnancy, and especially during perimenopause. Research from the Study of Women's Health Across the Nation (SWAN) found that perimenopause and early postmenopause are a higher-risk time for major depression. New anxiety, irritability or low mood in your 40s isn't "just you." We look at hormones, sleep, thyroid and stress together. Menopause care
